7 Types of Forum Members You Should Get to KnowJan 17 2008 | Social Networks |
Two weeks ago I posted about the ins and outs for forum marketing. When joining a community, especially if you plan to market to them, it is important to understand the dynamics behind a lot of the interactions.
Below are what I’ve noticed as the different types of prominent forum members.

The Worker Bees. These are the people that keep the forum moving. When someone posts a question they are quick to research the answer. When someone posts for advice, they give it. When someone need hugs, or encouragement they are there to offer it. These forum members will rarely cause controversy but they are the heart and soul of the community. They are the ones that keep coming back to make it lively.

When Offline Linkbait Ignores the Online PartJan 10 2008 | Design, Link Building |
I have a confession to make. I am a celebrity gossip addict. I love to look at pics and see what people are wearing. While browsing one of my favorite sites yesterday I came across what looked to me like pay dirt for some great link bait.
Target famous celebrities and bloggers that millions of people read and consume, get exposure for your brand, and LINKS. Looking at it a bit closer, I see some missed opportunity that could have been capitalized on and began to realize that this probably wasn’t intentional link bait (in our world-the Internet world) at all. More “attention-bait”.
Magazines, newspapers, colleges, government, have been employing “attention-bait” since the beginning of media.
First, the story itself is not featured on the site, which forces a link to the homepage. Perez Hilton (one of the most popular blogs on the interwebs) actually wound up linking out to a newspaper article about the article to give his readers a sense of what it was about.

The Ins and Outs of Forum MarketingJan 03 2008 | Social Networks |

The Ins and Outs of Forum Marketing
Yesterday Jake took us through Social Media Marketing and why it is so important to incorporate into your overall marketing strategy. Most of the time when Social Media Marketing is mentioned, we talk about large sites like Digg, Facebook, Reddit, StumbleUpon, etc. Today I want to discuss the benefits and strategies in using forums to your advantage.
Participating in forums can provide valuable insight to business owners. Not only for sales, but for some good perspectives from others in your industry as well as potential clients. Forum marketing is not always going to provide you with instant gratification though. It takes time to build a credible profile, and when participating in a forum you can wind up giving more information than you gain. I’m going to outline a few of the benefits of participating in forums as well as give you some basic tips for building a strong profile and using them to help your business.

YOU should attend the IMNY Charity Event to Benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma SocietyOct 08 2007 | Conferences |
I’ve got a great memory. It can be my greatest asset and my biggest curse at times because there are some things that I just cannot forget.
When I was in the first grade I had a best friend named Noelle. We did everything together, played together, hung out together, I just remember her always being around. And then after the summertime one year she wasn’t. And when we got back to school, a few weeks into it, we found out that Noelle was no longer with us and that she had died of leukemia. I don’t think I even knew what that meant at the time, but it’s stayed with me.
When Chris told me what the charity for the Internet Marketers of New York party was this time I was really happy. Happier even to see Marty at Aim Clear share his experience and story of survival. It means to me that great strides have been made over these past 23 years since my first acquaintance with the disease, and that things are getting done.

Hitting a Search PotholeSep 23 2007 | SEO |
Sometimes I wish I was a movie star simply because I would have more occassions to wear gowns. I don’t even watch that many movies. But if I did have a chance to wear one gown this year it would have been this one from Oscar De La Renta. I loved it when I saw it on the runway, and it still looks amazing when on a real life person too.

So lovely. Sigh….
I decided to head on over to the site to take a look at some more gowns, and it seems that the folks in charge of Oscar’s website need to rework the homepage a bit.

Do you know the way to San Jose?Aug 30 2007 | Conferences |
Last week Chris and I went to Search Engine Strategies San Jose. This was my second conference and my second SES. The first was a bit of culture shock. I had no clue what to expect. This time around it was great to meet new people, get to know people better that I had met briefly last time, and really start to feel like a part of this SEO community.
We arrived on Sunday and on our plane were Michael Gray & Family, and Danny Funk and Kevin Newcomb. It kind of felt like we were kids on a class trip.
San Jose is a beautiful city. Any where you look you can see the mountains and the first thing that struck me was the lack of humidity. One of the great things about San Jose is that you don’t seem to need a car to get around. Whatever we did that was local we were able to walk to which just makes everything easier. It was almost like we were on a huge college campus because every few minutes we would run into someone we knew.

Looking Up Sk*rt - Digg for WomenJun 08 2007 | Social Networks |
Sk*rt is a new social networking site that that has recently launched. To put it simply, it is like Digg for women. I found out about it through a blog I read regularly.
When the announcement was posted I went over to check it out right away. I understand the importance of Digg but I have to admit that the stories on there aren’t really my cup of tea.
The first thing I noticed is that there is no way to bury a story or push it down. Long-term (or more like short-term), I think this is going to have to be implemented especially once the site gets more popular and the people try to “game” it. I noticed today a few comments where people questioned the validity of something, but there was no way other than in the comments section to flag it.

I’m a Verizon Action Hero!…or could’ve beenMay 18 2007 | Business |
I heard about this neat viral thing that Verizon was doing where you could create your own movie starring yourself on the Internet. This seemed pretty cool to me and I figured I’d give it a try. I had a blast last summer with the Scissor Sisters music video going around that you could insert yourself into. (don’t try it because it doesn’t seem to work anymore)
At first I thought that it would be a cut out of my head on top of some moving parts, but then I saw that these movies take about 24 hours to generate.
So why is Verizon doing this? Well luckily they answer that question right on their website:

“The Power of Verizon Broadband”. I am about to be entertained in ways that I’ve never dreamed possible. Totally cool. Seems like fun. I will definitely give it a shot.

Endless.com - Is This Shoe Heaven?Apr 20 2007 | E-commerce |
When the seasons change I like to get new shoes (actually I like to get shoes at anytime but the season’s changing is always a good excuse)…
Up until recently when it came to shoes I’ve been an avid brick and mortar shopper, having to go into the actual store to try shoes on, I order everything else online but for some reason I need to try the shoes on in person before buying. But lately I am frustrated with that whole shopping experience, going from shop to shop when I can easily open several tabs at a time just seems to be a waste. Walking around a whole store where nothing is organized or really categorized doesn’t work for me anymore. I order my food online, my clothes, my makeup, my insurance and just about everything else - so why not my shoes?

How to Tell When You are Simply a Pair of Hands on a ProjectApr 09 2007 | Web Development |
Part of my job is to take the vision of a client and translate it into a tangible website. In some cases it is an extension or an arm to their business (e-commerce website for an existing shop, enhancements to an existing website) in others it is the entire business.

When you’ve got your entire business, your future business, one that doesn’t exist yet but will exist as soon as I complete my work, in someone else’s hands - you’re going to be anxious. You’re going to do whatever you can to ensure that what you’ve planned is going to come out as you’ve planned it. I liken it to how one might feel when they’re building a house.
