This is a new feature that I am going to be posting each month and I think it will really help those avid social media news/bookmarking users and also all the linkbaiters out there who are looking to build buzz and links. This list will contain some of the hot topics that you can build content around so you can harness pre-existing momentum so you don’t have to do all the legwork.
Having momentum in your corner is key in having success and helping content go viral; I even wrote a post breaking this down in detail. This is one of the things that we try to build all campaigns around, so I thought I would share a list of some hot topics currently in the social realm. Skim the list and see if you can incorporate any topics into your linkbait strategies for the month!
- NFL
Training camp has begun and the season is right around the corner. NFL linkbait is sure to do great this time o’ year. - District 9
Peter Jackson’s newest movie is flying a bit under the radar, but has gotten great reviews and has a really unique advertising campaign around it. - Cash for Clunkers Program
This program has been reported to have boosted auto sales by as much as 2% for some auto makers, and everyone is anxious to see what will happen with this program. - GI Joe: The Rise of the Cobra
It has some of the worst buzz around a movie ever and could be an epic flop. - UFC
After Brock Lesner won the heavyweight championship last month and street brawler Kimbo Slice signed on for the newest UFC reality show, there is a lot of hype around this MMA franchise. - Apple & Google
Apple recently dropped the Google Talk application from the iPhone Store, and Google’s CEO has since left Apple’s Board of Directors and a war is brewing. - Healthcare Reform
With new legislation possibly on its way, this has become a hot topic for anyone in political or medial industries. - Inglourious Basterds
This Nazi killin’ movie is Quentin Tarantino’s newest WWII flick that stars Brad Pitt. - PGA & Golf
With Phil Mickelson coming back from his hiatus and Tiger Woods coming off of a win, the PGA Championship should be a hot topic this month. - Back-to-School
Many colleges start up late August, so kicking out back-to-school information will be a good route to go in August. - Branding
Pizza Hut has already told the world they are going to be called “The Hut” a few months back; now RadioShack is going to simply be “the Shack“. Let the branding debate begin!
Now let the ideas flow and get creative (with the momentum on your side!). Happy August linkbaiting!
Have any other hot topics for the month of August? Feel free to share examples below, and don’t forget to follow 10e20 on Twitter and subscribe to our RSS feed.

Not gonna lie the MMA world is BUZZING RIGHT NOW! UFC 101 tomorrow, with some big fights. Fedor signed with Strike Force (another MMA production company) and Dana White (president of the UFC) has came out and verbally attacked Fedor and Strike Force. Also said he would put Strike Force out of business.
