Digg Now Showing Microsoft AdCenter AdsOct 11 2007 | Social Networks |
Back in July, I reported about Digg choosing Microsoft over Google to supply their contextual ads and then talked to the AP about this decision. Since that time I have still only seen Google ads on Digg. Well for the first time today I saw noticed that Digg is showing contextual ads from Microsoft and not Google. The strange thing is that I can only see the ads when I am not logged in and if I am using Internet Explorer. Here’s what I see in IE:

The ads aren’t labeled as Ads by Microsoft but if you mouse over the hyperlinks all the urls begin with something like this http:// r.msn.com which shows you that they are running through Microsoft.
The strange thing is that if I am in FireFox (logged in or not) I still only see Google Ads like this:

Are they just rolling the ads out to IE users since they are more likely to be pro-Microsoft or at least not anti-Microsoft (like many of Digg’s users who are known for their loyalty to FireFox, Linux and Apple).
Has anyone else noticed this?
Don’t forget to subscribe to the 10e20 RSS Feed!
PS> I use FireFox 98% of the time so perhaps I missed this if someone brought this up before…

October 11th, 2007 at 12:36 pmI tend to see a lot of posts calling me to repent before Jesus. I’m not sure if some personal tracking is going on or if diggers have been targeted as sinners.
Has anyone ever clicked on a digg ad? I havn’t.

October 11th, 2007 at 6:12 pmActually, that’s a brilliant ad strat. Never heard of contextualized (Digg crowd) browser-based ad-targeting before. I did now. tx. However, 1.Lyndon’s got a point: who clicks those?

Digg adds annoy the heck out of me and I’ve never click 1 - ever.
Flashy banners and contextual adds in your face all the time.
There was one campaign for SNORG TEES a while ago which was so prevalent on the site that I exhausted from over exposure and will never visit their site; ever.
Great looking out Chris on spotting this browser based testing. It’s interesting to see it actually in transition. So do the guys at aQuantive have their work cut out for them?

October 11th, 2007 at 8:41 pm@ hyveup - I have also heard that it might be because the M$ ads don’t work in Firefox.
@ Jake - looks like it

Something new I learned is that sometimes ads don’t need clicks, just impressions (eye balls). Usually, with the web properties I work on anyway, these ads just need impressions, but clicks are, of course, highly desirable. This may not be the same with these Microsoft PPC like ads, and I am sure it is not like that with Google AdSense ads.
Any thoughts?
