Transforming Text: Photoshop Tutorial

Sep 24, 2007 by Patrick Winfield | Design, Tutorial

Some things are easier to do than others when manipulating type. Here is a quick tutorial on how to transform and distort your type in an easily scalable way with a vector mask.

This works on the same premise as distorting or transforming a basic shape. When you convert a text layer to a shape a vector mask is applied to it and ables you to make many transform functions. Very quick, very easy, very effective.

Step 1. Create a new layer with your text on it. Experiment with various widths and styles. For exaggerated distortions I find that a thick or Bold Condensed type form works best.

Step 2. With the type layer selected go to Layer/Type/Convert to Shape.

Step 3. Now you can go to Edit/Transform Path/and choose any of the transform functions available. This will create a working vector mask path that will make the transforms smooth and scalable. For this example Skew was used with a bit of Distort on the left side corner.

Step 4. When you are happy with your transforming go to the Layer Palette and right click on the Vector Mask thumbnail for the text layer. Now select Rasterize Vector Mask.

Thats it! Play with the various transforming functions with this technique, you will get clean crisp lines and it is a much more functional method to use than say just Rasterizing the type right off the bat.

I was trying to do a circle the other night and couldn’t figure it out. I used Illustrator and just did it by sight. Any ideas? (Sample graphic is at http://navyvets.com

Douglas I am not sure if you are referring to this tutorial or not, but usually to make a perfect circle one of the ’shift or control’ keys must be held down while you are clicking and dragging.

    good luck

Good info on PPC! Let this comment take as discussion, as I want to ask few some facts from you about pay per click. Do you think that pay per click is important for every webmaster? How much ppc expense (in percentage) of your income do you think is ok to incur? Actually, I have no experience about PPC, as I never used it for my websites and still I am gaining a lot of customers and sales. I am not going to say anything about my way of working because I do not want you to consider this comment as spam. But visiting my site can give you more information about how I am gaining thousands of customers in short time without PPC. I visited your blog because I am collecting information about the webmasters, campaigns and anything about pay per click that’s why when I saw your blog is great, I could not stop myself sharing something. In my opinion PPC is only beneficial if you optimize keywords and use the most relevant keywords only! Let this discussion going on? What are your views? Your Blog is really a great one! Maintaining a blog like yours is not an easy task, yet you did that! Congrates! – Any Comments? – Thanks – Regards
