Google says Stumble This!Apr 18 2007 | Google |
Google wanted to buy toolbar based social network StumbleUpon according to TechCrunch & Gigaom but unfortunately they lost out to eBay (allegedly). So if you’re Google what do you do? Simply build your own “StumbleUpon” into your extremely popular toolbar - and it looks exactly like that’s what they did. In a blog post tonight called Searching Without a Query they explain:
The first is a recommendations button on the Google Toolbar that looks like a pair of dice. Click on the dice, and we’ll take you to a site that may be interesting to you based on your past searches. If you want another, just click the dice again and we’ll show you a new one. We’ll give you up to 50 new sites per day that might be of interest. Just add the button to your Toolbar. (In order to use this feature, you need the latest version of the Toolbar.)
Oh yeah and to use this - you better be signed into your Google Account or its not going to work. Cool feature or another way to make sure you are always signed into G? I know at least one person this will bother…

G has become a super data power house on the web. They have so much INTERNET USER data that surely they must be capitalizing on, either by buying private companies that are highly searched, or building companies that people are heavily searching for.
Whatever it is, I agree with Mr. Amore- It is a bit scary! Can someone new bring a great search engine onto the web already…

Sure they can still follow your habits with plain old cookies, but then there’s a helluva lot more malicious people out there who are already doing that if you don’t police your cookies. When we accept Google services, especially Google account services, we voluntarily hand our info to Google. Don’t want to do that? Use msn.com. I’m sure they aren’t doing anything sneaky.
Kudos to Google for developing their own system. I’ve been Stumbling for a long time, and it’s getting tedious, and as with all web social tools fraught with dweebs. Maybe Google will find some interesting sites since Stumbleupon users have lost their ability to do so.
My only complaint is the integration with Google Toolbar. That’s big and ugly and does nothing I can’t already do with basic Google and FF features. I’m not going to install it just to try out their new tool. Sorry. Can I please just have a bookmarklet, Google?

October 15th, 2007 at 5:29 pmI have just discovered Stumble Upon and I love it. One of the biggest issues with surfing was coming up with what to search for…..this makes it really easy. Not sure that a limit of 50 per day is going to work. Picture a long cold winter weekend at home……(sorry, I’m not a skier)
