USA Today LogoTraditional media companies are paying more and more attention to online “buzz” that surrounds their stories. In December, we saw the New York Times incorporate buttons on news articles that allowed users to share and discuss these events on social networks. With the credibility of such a far-reaching newspaper, this was likely a wake-up call for the other media outlets who were not necessarily allowing for solid long-term conversation (which consequently could give the site some valuable links).

USA Today appears to be next in line, and from what we hear, may be even stronger than the New York Times. Over the weekend, they plan to launch a brand new redesign that allows users to comment on stories, create a profile page (with photos!), and even create a blog. Beyond that, you can network with particular users and become their friends — including reporters, who will also be maintaining profiles on the network. They plan to launch forums as well where users can share their stories with accompanied pictures. Overall, the goal is to encourage healthy discussion around news and current events and to keep users engaged.

This is a great way for traditional media to branch out of those traditional roots. As the world evolves, so do we. The Internet is changing in such a way where everyone can contribute.
