It sounded like a great idea. Google’s Click-to-Call was announced less than a week ago — but TechCrunch reports that it’s already been pulled.

The speculation regarding its removal is pretty much points to one option: prank calling. It was even encouraged (and attempted) in some social spheres. Google must have taken the note, and instead of instituting safeguards to prevent this system from being exploited, they pulled it (indefinitely?)

TechCrunch suggests that there be SMS confirmation prior to placing the first call. I’m definitely down for that. Or a reporting system for abuse (whose number shows up on the business’s caller ID anyway?)

It’s too bad that the small business has to take a hit, and hopefully Google is working behind the scenes to change the way it will be handled for the future if it comes back (and yes, we think it should).

Update: It already is! And TechCrunch has also updated their blog accordingly — guess Google was working on it after all.
